Are you ready for the winter?

Whether you are putting your car into dedicated storage, or preparing for your car to be mothballed in your garage, there are some simple steps you can take which will stand you in good stead when spring arrives.

Location –

  • Choosing the right space for storing your car is important. Ideally, your car should be put somewhere dry, secure, and with good ventilation to prevent condensation. Avoid areas which are subject to extremes in temperature or prone to damp. A dehumidifier might also be a worthwhile investment to stay on top of moisture levels.

Cleanliness –

  • Preparing the bodywork and surfaces will pay dividends in the longer term. Clean the bodywork to remove road grime using a contactless wash process, taking time to clean the underside and up inside the wheel arches – removing the wheels for this will allow a thorough clean. Using a tar remover or clay bar will ensure all contaminants are removed from the paint surface, and the application of a high quality wax will be much more effective.
  • Inside, remove all rubbish and debris before a thorough vacuum of the cabin. Clean and polish the glass inside and out, and, if the car has leather upholstery, now would be a good opportunity to give it some attention with a nourishing conditioner.
  • Open the windows slightly to help with ventilation and prevent condensation building up inside which can lead to mould.
  • Once all prepared, invest in a good quality breathable car cover to add one final layer of protection.

Fluids & checks –

  • As with preparing the paintwork, the recommendation is to change the oil and filter before tucking a car away in storage, removing any contaminants in the system.
  • If possible, the recommendation is to put the car up on axle stands to best protect tyres. If this is not possible or feasible, inflate tyres to the highest safe level. Once in position – on axle stands or parked with chocks – leave the handbrake off to prevent the mechanism from seizing.

Battery –

  • Attach a smart battery charger or conditioner, to ensure charge levels and for it to be in prime condition for when spring arrives.
