Clearing up the mysteries of ATA Carnets

There is a lot of uncertainty and confusion around ATA Carnets. What they are, how to manage the processes and the big one, do you actually need one?

Let’s try and clear up some of the confusion.

What actually is an ATA Carnet? –

  • Simply put, it is an official list of items that are being transported into or out of the country of origin. It can be inspected at any point by customs officials, and allows the items to transit without paying taxes or duties.

Do you actually need a Carnet?

  • It is a legal requirement for all vehicles, spares and equipment being transported anywhere into the EU and worldwide from the UK temporarily. to have an ATA Carnet in place. It also applies to items being brought into the UK from the EU and worldwide on a temporary basis. This includes transportation to events, races, rallies and other activities.

How long do they last and can they be renewed?

  • A Carnet can be issued for 2, 6 or 12 months. The document can be renewed, up to 12 months, when each item listed then needs to be returned to source. The items can exit the country again, but on a newly issued Carnet.

How much is a Carnet?

  • Ahhh, the big one. There is no specific priceless. Instead, they are priced according to duration and based on the value of the items they list.
