Sea freight
Whether you are shipping a classic, vintage or racing car for a rally, race event or purchasing from overseas, we manage the whole process from start to finish.
Setting sail
Sea freight is recognised as one of the most cost-effective methods for transporting cars around the world. We are experts in this area, supported by more than 30 years of experience handling containerised freight, and working with port authorities and shipping lines. We work closely with these contacts and our global freight forwarding partner, Kuehne+Nagel to ensure each shipment is managed and coordinated at every step of the journey.
The racking systems we use are designed to maximise the space within a container allowing for additional vehicles, kit or spares to be packed within both 20ft and 40ft containers.
Does sea freight work for you?
We offer a comprehensive door to door service, designed specifically to meet each individual requirement, but we know there may still be some questions. Get in touch if you require any further information or to discuss a bespoke quote.
What information is required for a sea freight quote?
Each quote is raised bespoke to the requirements, but as a basic requirement we will require any time constraints, the collection and delivery address, contact details at each location, weights and dimensions of all items, and confirmation if the vehicle is a permanent or temporary export.
How many vehicles can be shipped in a container?
As standard, 1 vehicle can be shipped in a 20ft container, and 2 vehicles in a 40ft container. If you are planning to attend an event or a rally where the vehicles will be returning to the UK, we can look at using a racking system which allows 2 vehicles to be stacked in a 20ft container, or 4 in a 40ft container. Please get in touch to find out further information.
Are any specific preparations required before sending a vehicle by sea?
The vehicle will need to have minimal fuel in the tank prior to loading. All containers are prepared with a moisture-absorbing ‘dry pole’ system but it is recommended that any vulnerable elements of the vehicle are also protected against moisture using an oil-based product or similar. Any shipments to Australia will also require a certificate to confirm that the vehicle is free from asbestos.
How does it work if I want to use a local or preferred customs broker?
We work with a network of customs contacts across the world, but we will liaise and coordinate with any preferred contacts to ensure the processes are all handled and managed efficiently and effectively.
Is insurance cover included in the quote?
We trade under BIFA standard trading terms which offers limited liability cover. We would recommend you take out an all risks policy for any shipment and we can offer this at a preferential rate.
Do you require an ATA Carnet or other documentation?
It is now a legal requirement for all vehicles, spares and equipment being transported temporarily anywhere into the EU and worldwide from the UK to have an ATA Carnet in place. This includes temporary transportation to events, rallies and races – and we can assist and support with each step of the process.
